Gastro Oesophageal Reflux Disease (GORD)
What is gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD)?
With GORD, stomach acid refluxes, or rises up, into the oesophagus. This causes a burning sensation often referred to as heartburn. GORD may be caused by a weak lower oesophageal sphincter (LOS), a diet of fatty or spicy foods, alcohol consumption, vigorous exercise, or a hiatus hernia.
What are the signs and symptoms of GORD?
The signs and symptoms of GORD may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Chronic heartburn that cannot be alleviated with antacids
- Vomiting
- Difficulty swallowing
- Chronic coughing
- Wheezing
Which test(s)and/or procedure(s) may be requested to determine if I have GORD?
Our surgeon may order a number of tests to determine if you have GORD. These include:
- Gastroscopy, in which a small plastic tube is inserted through the mouth and into the digestive tract to search for any abnormalities;
- 24-hour pH study, in which a probe is inserted into the esophagus to measure the occurrence of reflux over a 24-hour period;
- Oesophageal manometry, which tests the strength of the LOS and the oesophagus.
How is this condition surgically treated?
A surgical procedure called a Laparoscopic Fundoplication is used to surgically treat GORD.
